The address presentation by the committee chairman Wasiu was convened to consider two critical items , the defense of the 2025 internally generated revenue (IGR) & the budget proposal of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the performance under the 2024 Appropriation ACT guided by the provisions of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended which vested exclusive power of Appropriation under Section 80 &81 and the over sight of the ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) under Section 88 and 89 the responsibility which empowers the committee to scrutinize, question and ensure the judicious use of public funds in line with national interest.also the Fiscal Responsibility ACT,2007, Section 21 and 22 mandates all government corporation and Agencies including those listed in the first schedule of the Act- to prepare and submit their annual budget and revenue estimate to the National Assembly for consideration and approval, It further mandates the submission of periodic performance reports to enhance transparency and fiscal discipline.
Wasiu remarked that NPA as one of the top revenue -generating Agencies of the Federal Government & a strategic player in the Marine sector is expected to demonstrate the highest standard of accountability and operational efficiency. Which the purpose of the engagement was a pivotal role in facilitating trade, support Port infrastructure development and improve Nigeria,s competitiveness as a maritime hub.
The review of 2024 Appropriation ACT is focused on key performance indicators-Budget utilization,project implementation,status revenue performance and service delivery.
The committee chairman Wasiu ,reiterated the committee zeal to continue to play it's oversight role effectively not as sn adversary but as a partner in progress focused -Directed and committed to work with NPA and the relevant stakeholders to ensure maritime sector contributes meaningfully to national development and economic growth.
In conclusion the committee chairman urged all the participants on the engagement to openness with mutual respect and share commitment to the National service.
