THE SENATE PLANS TO REVOLUTIONIZE AGRIC-EDUCATION FOR VALUED AGRICULTURAL GROWTH IN NIGERIA

Initiatives to enhance Agricultural education for valued Agric Development was revealed at the strategic stakeholder engagement session hosted by the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, chaired by Distinguished Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, at the National Assembly in Abuja penultimate Thursday.
He highlighted the critical role of agricultural education in achieving Nigeria’s food security, necessary economic diversification vide promoting the non-oil sector by enhancing the agro-allied development and the imperative youth/women empowerment in Nigeria.
Senator Alli further reiterated that the committee would amongst other imperatives, drive key legislative reforms, advocate for increased funding, and strengthen international partnerships to reposition the sector for national agricultural sustainance and growth.
It was enchanting to note as announced, that the Senate would lead a delegation of agricultural educators and institutional representatives to the COP30 Climate Conference in Brazil. The move is intended to promote the concept of green colleges and showcase Nigeria’s agricultural innovations on a global platform for the international audience.
Also, the Committee's technical consultant, Mr. Promise Amkpaah“ submitted that The Senate is not just legislating; it is leading global advocacy. At COP30, Nigeria will present innovations from its agricultural institutions and build alliances to attract investment and knowledge transfer,”.
While appreciating participants, he expounded on plans to convene the first-ever Legislative Summit and Expo on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions in October 2025. This will be followed by a Global Benchmarking Tour in early 2026 to explore best practices in Brazil, the European Union and other relevant climes notable for Agricultural Sector Development.
The distinguished Senator Alli encouraged stakeholders to remain dedicated and committed to the reform agenda, expresdin the committee’s readiness to partner with local, international players and development partners to bring about meaningful change.
According to the lawmaker representing Oyo South Senatorial District at The Senate, the Agricultural Sector is set to witness progressive shift to enhance food security and agro-allied development towards attaining national economic growth.
