BREAKING: Senate Committee Demands Digital Transparency in Regional Budget Review
Abuja, February 13, 2026
Report by Anyanwu Chukwuemeka
The Senate Committee on Regional Development on Friday sent a strong signal to Nigeria’s newly created Regional Development Commissions, insisting on stricter transparency measures as it concluded deliberations on the 2026 budget proposals.
Presiding over the session, Committee Chairman Senator Jide Ipinsagba Emmanuel led lawmakers through a detailed review of allocations earmarked for regional intervention agencies, including the South West Development Commission (SWDC) and the North West Development Commission (NWDC).
At the heart of the discussions was accountability.
The committee directed that no funds should be released without comprehensive digital documentation of proposed infrastructure projects — a move aimed at preventing duplication, abandoned sites, and opaque procurement processes.
The development comes amid heightened political attention following the recent announcement of the 2027 general election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Lawmakers stressed the need to protect development projects from political slowdowns typically associated with election cycles.
Sources at the meeting described the atmosphere as firm but strategic, with members emphasizing performance benchmarks, compliance standards, and inter-chamber coordination with the House Appropriations Committee.
Observers say the outcome of Friday’s session could shape the operational framework of regional commissions going forward, particularly in areas of project monitoring and fiscal discipline.
More updates as the story develops.
