NASS, Housing Ministry Push for Increased Funding to Boost Affordable Housing Nationwide
The National Assembly has called for increased and sustained funding for Nigeria’s housing sector, highlighting its importance to economic growth, job creation, and national development.
This position was expressed during the 2026 budget defence of the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development before relevant Senate and House Committees. The Senate Committee, chaired by Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and the House Committee, chaired by Abdulmumin Jibrin, both stressed the need to prioritise housing due to its wide economic impact.
Tambuwal reaffirmed the Senate’s support for policies and funding mechanisms that expand access to affordable housing and improve urban infrastructure. Jibrin noted that the housing sector remains underfunded and requires greater investment to maximise its economic potential.
Leading the Ministry’s presentation, Housing Minister Ahmed Musa Dangiwa outlined key 2026 priorities, including delivering 4,000 housing units across 15 states under the Renewed Hope Housing Programme, completing National Housing Programme projects in over 20 states and the FCT, rehabilitating 28 Federal Secretariats, and upgrading building crafts training schools.
The Ministry also requested special funding for MDGs/SDGs projects, urban renewal and slum upgrades, zonal intervention projects, and infrastructure to support PPP housing developments nationwide. It reaffirmed its commitment to working with the National Assembly to expand affordable housing and strengthen urban development across the country.
